my recent light bulb moment

It's funny how some things stay the same

Soo I've recently been focusing on trying to put all the puzzle pieces together for this design business. There's been a foundation for a handful of years at this point but, as you may know, I'm feeling ambitious.

Part of this process has been going back through the last 5+ years of projects and posts and analyzing to inform the direction I want to go. And there was one thing in particular that really stuck with me, this video.

Why did this simple video feel so striking to me? Because it shows that sometimes, things don't change. Now if you know me, there's been a lot of change in my life since I posted this in June of 2021. For example I...

  • Use different pronouns

  • Moved across the country

  • Cut off about 85% of that hair

  • Met my partner a few months after posting this

  • Have a whole graduate degree that this version of Taylor had no idea they'd pursue

As someone smart (and I think Greek?) once said, 'the only constant in life is change'. And because that has been apparent in my life the last few years, I was honestly surprised about how much this video still rung true for me and what I want Habitat to be.

I had no idea how clear of a vision I had for this business when I first started out. And honestly, as different of a person as I am now, I feel a sense of pride for my previous self with that vision.

Recently, part of me felt like I was needing to bull doze a lot of what I had put together originally. It was relieving to see that I still have the same core values and ideas when I started this thing.

Now sure, would I have edited this video differently? Or presented my ideas in a more compelling way? Sure. Hindsight definitely tests my confidence sometimes. But let me tell you the elements that I still deeply connect with:

1- habitats work uniquely to support livelihood

2- infusing intentionality into design

3- discover ways to reflect you distinctively in the space

4- designs that encourage being in company with others

5- collaborating and listening are primary tools to champion folks

6- connect with communities to support local businesses and organizations doing impactful work

This is when I realized, this is not a complete tear down. It's much more about revisiting the roots I feel strongly about and finding fresh ways to incorporate them. Pretty much the exact same way I would approach a renovation project.

Thanks for listening, perhaps I'll dive in deeper into these ideas soon!

Reflecting often,

Taylor
