new mediums with the new year

“where have you been?”

I’ve felt guilty for not keeping up with various platforms to support my business. I personally don’t interact with most social media platforms. I’ve been intentionally distancing myself from various forms of social media for over 10 years (and have failed in many cases) so it was difficult to navigate using social platforms for my business as a one person show.

It doesn’t feel fun to market my business, particularly with algorithms. I don’t like putting that kind of pressure on myself or my business, I prefer to do the work and less about ‘cracking the algorithm’ to effectively market. So what did I do? I stopped posting on all the platforms for my business for the last three years or so.

Yes, that may sound like a death sentence to some folks, “how did you keep your business going?” and clients organically found me. I’m still afloat and it isn’t my sole source of income.

“where will you be?”

I don’t dislike all social media platforms, I still very much enjoy interacting with Youtube and appreciate different mediums for different purposes. At the beginning of this calendar year I started writing personal newsletters for my friends and family since moving across the country and I have really enjoyed putting those together. I’ve always enjoyed crafting different forms of text.

I want to further develop my storytelling skills and enhance my natural tendencies to distribute informative materials which is why Substack and Youtube feel like the platforms for Habitat to be on currently.

“what can I expect?”

Well this is a loaded question, I’m not fully sure yet! I envision this space to be somewhere I share different design techniques I incorporate into spaces like design psychology and sustainability. But I’m also open to exploring different avenues like curating home decor pieces, best Etsy finds, things that are inspiring me, etc. There’s also apparently some cool podcasting features on this platform that I could want to play with in the months to come. If there’s anything specific you’d like to see, please share!

I’ll also go back to posting on Youtube regularly so you can find other content there as well, if that’s your kind of thing.
